Stanford’s StartX is the global reference model for university-affiliated startup acceleration. Key design features that HK institutions are increasingly adopting: Non-Profit Structure — StartX is a non-profit separate from Stanford, allowing it to support startups without Stanford taking equity, which simplifies IP negotiations. Alumni Network Intensity — StartX leverages Stanford’s alumni network more systematically than most university programmes, with structured mentorship matching and regular alumni-founder events. Sector-Specific Tracks — StartX operates dedicated tracks for medtech (StartX Med) and deep tech, providing specialised mentorship rather than a one-size-fits-all curriculum. For HK universities, the most transferable lessons are: separate the accelerator from the TTO to avoid conflicts of interest between IP monetization and founder support, invest in alumni network infrastructure (a CRM system and a dedicated community manager), and create sector-specific rather than generalist programmes.
